A LANDMARK IN THE PORT WINE HISTORY
Real Companhia Velha is a unique milestone in Port Wine companies. Since 1756 it has a glory past. Its initial proposal was given by royal charter of King Joseph I, under the auspices of Prime Minister, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Mello, the Marquês de Pombal, with the name Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto-Douro or Real Companhia Velha.
The Company had the task of ensuring the culture of vineyards and the preservation of the production.
In 1870 the Real Companhia Velha, spreads out their business exporting to Scandinavia, Russia and especially Brazil and platinum region.
However, it is between 1961 and 1974 that the Real Companhia Velha has a great period of expansion that led to profound changes, it proceeded to the change of the head office; renovation of equipment; business expansion, technological modernization in winemaking; preparation, processing and storage of wines.
In the 90s, we witness the evolution of modern viticulture, by adopting new techniques and cultural procedures that have revolutionized the range of the company’s wines.
In 2006, Real Companhia Velha celebrated 250 years of existence and unceasing activity at the service of the Port Wine.
In there centuries-old cellars of Real Companhia Velha and in the silence of the warehouses, the Port Wine is stored in prime wooden casks for ten, twenty, thirty years or more, according to the time required for each port wine reaches its perfect maturation point in the evolution of color and taste, is a natural process of “oxidation” .
