Burmester
Burmester has long been recognized for its Port and Douro Doc wines. It all started in London in 1750, when Henry Burmester joined forces with John Nash to create Burmester, Nash & Co.
From Vila Nova de Gaia, they began exporting Ports to Europe.
Over the years, the company passed from generation to generation until, in 1834, Johann Wilhelm Burmester (J.W.B.), a direct descendant of the founding partner, Henry Burmester, landed in Porto without imagining that he would become the founder of a new dynasty that would become famous in the city. Persistent and hard-working, J.W.B. involved his children in the business and, in 1880, changed the company name to J.W.Burmester & Co. He took advantage of the opportunity for social expansion in Europe and acquired complementary businesses, such as a company dedicated to the manufacture of bottles and two ships that would ship Port wine. He became the driving force behind a new lineage that would become famous over time.
