Barão Vilar House
Barão de Vilar, Vinhos, S.A. is a young company with a history spanning several centuries.
With links to a family lineage - van Zeller - that has 14 uninterrupted generations dedicated to the wine trade and production, the company was established in 1996 by Fernando van Zeller, after the sale of Quinta do Noval, then in the family's possession, to the French insurance company AXA, recovering a family title granted by Queen Maria II for its corporate name.
Initially a Port wine producer, it was decided in 2008, as part of its strategic plan, to extend its activity to the production of Douro DOC wines.
To this end, an investment project was developed to build a winery from scratch in Santa Comba da Vilariça, in the Upper Douro, equipped with the most modern and advanced technology currently available on the market.
Despite its youth, Barão de Vilar has seen its wines recognized nationally and internationally with numerous awards (Revista de Vinhos, Vinalies, IWC, Brussels World Competition), and is now one of the largest operators in the special category Port segment (the company mainly sells to international markets).
The company currently controls approximately 100 hectares of vineyards, mainly in the Upper Douro.
